About the Calf Scheme
If you are a farmer, please join the PGG Wrightson IHC Calf Scheme today by completing and submitting this online Calf Scheme pledge form.
History
The PGG Wrightson IHC Calf Scheme combines the efforts and generosity of group of farmers with PGG Wrightson to raise funds for New Zealanders with an intellectual disability.
Launched in 1984, the Calf Scheme is a vital fundraiser, with more than 4000 calves donated annually raising over $1m. Rural families like Isaac’s (pictured) rely on IHC and our service arm IDEA Services. In many of these communities IHC is often the only organisation providing crucial support for people with an intellectual disability and their families.
How does it work?
Farmers raise a calf or calves until they are weaned, or pledge to donate to IHC the value of a calf. The calves are then sold at a weaner fair through the PGG Wrightson livestock trading network. All proceeds go directly towards assisting people with an intellectual disability.
How can you participate?
Just submit the online Calf Scheme pledge form or call IHC Fundraising on 0800 746 444.
After four to five months of raising the calf, an IHC Fundraiser will contact you to make arrangements for a transport firm to pick up the animal.
We will also give you numbered ear tags to attach to the calves. As well as easy identification, these tags are your entry into a generous prize pool of over $15,000 sponsored by PGG Wrightson. In addition, PGG Wrightson sponsors a quality gift each year when you sign up to support IHC.
Sponsors
New Zealand’s largest rural supply company, PGG Wrightson, is the principal sponsor of the Calf Scheme. PGG Wrightson’s financial sponsorship covers the costs of promoting the Calf Scheme, and its expert livestock advice, support and networks are central to the success of the scheme.
Since 2003, ZeeTags has provided the Calf Scheme with primary and secondary ear tags without charge. The company has also provided expert guidance around animal health requirements.
The generous support of our sponsors means your donation is able to go much further and make a significant difference in the lives of ordinary New Zealanders.
Patron Colin Meads
For over 22 years All Black legend Colin Meads (pictured) has been a staunch supporter of the Calf Scheme. After a lifetime in farming, Colin points to the IHC Calf Scheme as something that makes him very proud to be a farmer and to be a New Zealander.
Colin says: “I see firsthand what a great job IHC does in our rural community. Our country has come a long way from the institutions of a decade or two ago and I personally thank the many generous farmers who have helped make this possible”.
