What we do

At IHC we work to make sure that everyone with an intellectual disability is supported to lead a happy, safe and fulfilling life.

Our passion is to see every person who has an intellectual disability achieving their dreams.

We provide services, advocacy and housing options for people all over New Zealand. Services are provided through our two service delivery arms, IDEA Services Ltd and Timata Hou Ltd. Accessible Properties Ltd is our provider of social housing.

IDEA Services employs around 6000 staff and in 2010/11 supported 6470 people to live, learn, work and enjoy life as part of the community.

Services are mainly funded by government contracts through the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Social Development.

Timata Hou provides intensive rehabilitative support to around 60 people who have complex behaviour as well as an intellectual disability.

It provides services in Auckland and Wellington. Timata Hou is a designated Regional Intellectual Disability Supported Accommodation Service (RIDSAS) and people are referred through the Regional Intellectual Disability Care Agency (RIDCA).

Accessible Properties Ltd was set up in 2010 to manage the IHC property portfolio and to be involved in the social housing market in New Zealand.

The charitable arm of IHC is called IHC Programmes, and it is funded by fundraising money.  It’s work includes advocacy, self advocacy, volunteering, membership, fundraising, communications and the library.

Executive management team

The executive management team is responsible for the day-to-day management of IHC. It operates in close partnership with the Board of Governance and Association committees.

IDEA Services has two regional general managers who are based in Christchurch and Auckland. They are responsible for vocational, residential and supported living services.

Area managers report to the regional managers and are responsible for the services in their area.

A general manager is responsible for Family/Whanau services throughout New Zealand, and another for Specialist Services. A clinical director looks after the implementation of clinical services and policies. Timata Hou also has a general manager.

National office

IHC’s national office is based in Wellington. Around 60 people support the different activities of the organisation, with IT, administration, payroll, human resources, quality, properties, finance, Timata Hou management and health and safety all led by the Chief Executive (CE).

IHC Programmes, which includes fundraising, advocacy, self advocacy, communications, library and volunteering also operates from national office.
