People with an intellectual disability have the same right to work as other New Zealanders. Workers with an intellectual disability have the same rights, protection and responsibilities as all other employees. Life on a benefit is tough. Many people with an intellectual disability are forced to live restricted lives because of poverty.
Discrimination and lack of understanding often exclude people with an intellectual disability from the workforce. People with an intellectual disability may need support to prepare for employment, to get a job and to learn the tasks and culture of the workplace.
