Why be a member

Your membership counts when we make submissions to government, speak to the media and when you tell others about what we do.
Not everyone has the time to get involved but joining is important as it allows us all to have an impact.
Members receive Community Moves three times a year. Community Moves is our magazine that has stories, news and views of people with intellectual disabilities and their families.
Members can sign up for IHC’s Hot Issues a monthly e-newsletter keeping you up-to-date on what’s happening in the community and in IHC. A mix of comment, opinion and news.
Members can also vote for the Board of Governance, who set the overall direction of IHC.
Members support our advocacy campaigns and submissions. Find out what the latest campaigns and submissions are about and give your support to them by:
- Signing up your support
- Making comment and having input
- Talking to an advocate
Use the library and information services
IHC has a comprehensive Library and Information Service on intellectual disability. The Library will search and access information, books, research and resources on request.
Help with quality monitoring of services
IHC has several ways of monitoring service for quality. If you are interested in getting involved at branch level then contact your local branch.
Events
Members can be invited to be part of IHC events and contribute to local fundraising events.
Local Associations
Members can also choose to become involved with their local Association. Every Association is different and has its own set of priorities.
Best of all, being a member means you have access to other people who are interested in intellectual disability. Many members have a family member with an intellectual disability, so if you want advice or someone to listen, or want to be part of local networks, you’ll know who to contact.
