Today there are 13,000 young New Zealand families who struggle with the pressures of raising a child with an intellectual disability. There are 29,000 adults with an intellectual disability across New Zealand, with hopes and dreams of an ordinary life.
For the past 60 years, IHC has been at the forefront of a huge change to ensure New Zealanders with an intellectual disability are not locked away in institutions – not excluded from their communities.
But there are reminders every day of just how much more there is to do.
We support:
- More than 2800 people with intellectual disabilities living in IHC homes and flats in the community, foster care and contract board. We support people to live independently if they wish.
- 1500 families caring for their children with an intellectual disability at home. Respite care, home support, holiday and after-school programmes give parents and caregivers much-needed support.
- 4000 people working in vocational settings, or a combination of work and community activities. People gain new skills and support to be part of their community.
- more than 35,000 young and old New Zealanders through our Advocacy and Self-Advocacy programmes. We have been a leader over the past 60 years in ensuring people with intellectual disabilities are included in their communities.
Fundraising support is for IHC’s services and programmes that do not receive government funding.
