Election candidates questioned by disability community
Yesterday evening nearly 200 of the wider disability community gathered at Wharewaka on Wellington's waterfront to hear political candidates answer questions affecting them ahead of the 7 November election.
Rima Nakhle MP represented the National Party, Julie Anne Genter MP, represented the Green Party, Priyanca Radhakrishnan for Labour, Laura McClure MP for ACT, with Jenny Marcroft for NZ First and Qiulae Wong for Opportunity Party.
Broadcaster and writer Susie Ferguson was the forum moderator as candidates answered questions from the floor and from those watching online. IHC's David Corner again took on the role of timekeeper making sure everyone got a fair chance to be heard.
Some robust debate emerged around issues of pay equity for support workers, embedding Enabling Good Lives principles in policy and decision making and strengthening the Total Mobility scheme to make transport costs more manageable for disabled people.
IHC was the lead organiser for the forum and was supported by Access Matters, Blind Low Vision NZ, Blind Citizens NZ, CCS Disability Action, Deaf Aotearoa, Disabled Persons Assembly, New Zealand Down Syndrome Association, Spectrum Care, The Personal Advocacy and Safeguarding Adults Trust, and Your Way | Kia Roha.
There will be a link soon for those who want to watch the recording.
