I was inspired by a cubism painting. I decided to draw a mother and baby giraffe and divided them into sections. I created various, warm coloured prints on warm coloured paper and used these for the sections to my giraffes. It was hard to punch out the narrow legs. I glued them together and layered them onto my background. I wanted the background to look like the sun setting in the African plains. I sketched over the top of my giraffes to show details in their faces.

To seperate the black and white colour on my canvas, I chose the Yin and Yang design to represent the concept of two complementary forces in the universe, balancing to maintain harmony - I wanted to show that our world is constantly revolving from day into night and night into day. I recycled plastic rubbish to transform my canvas into an art piece but the message in my poem remains - lets end plastic use and conserve our beautiful earth!?

I made a picture of a ghost shrimp. I was inspired by my studies of shrimps. I liked the ghost shrimp as they are see-through and are hard to catch. I wanted to have the shrimp pop out, so I made the body thicker than the background paper. It was hard to cut the legs and antenna because the paper kept on ripping.

Matariki has given me peace, meaning and purpose. To add a deeper connection with my Matariki art, I am now learning te reo Māori. Matariki isn't just a public holiday to me. It is protecting life with meaning, with purpose and with aroha. They are the kaitiaki of life and it has taught me that life is precious. Every colour, every brush stroke and every thought in this Matariki painting was made with mana, wairua and aroha. Dee.
