Kāpiti Hub explores what’s under the boat

Kāpiti Hub had a morning of intense concentration and creativity recently, as artist and IHC Art Awards Judge Michel Tuffery visited to lead a drawing session. The session was also live streamed on IHC Media, so artists from across the motu could join in.
Michel Tuffery has been running IHC Media’s Thursday drawing session ahead of entries opening for the IHC Art Awards on 14 April.
The session began with everyone drawing a boat on the water. Then Michel suggested they go “under the boat”.

The artists proceeded to draw a series of sea creatures, including a yellowfin tuna, a crab, a whale and, much to Charlotte’s delight, a turtle.
They also had fun drawing a little blue penguin, te wheke (an octopus) and a giant squid that many people might recognise from visits to Te Papa.
More people arrived and joined in the session at the Hub after they had finished at dance class, but those who were drawing remained focused. There was an air of such quiet concentration – you could have heard a pin drop.
“It was hard-out concentration,” says Michel. “I can feel it on the Zoom classes each week.” Finally, everyone was invited to show what they had created. Those who had joined the session online held their art up to their cameras so everyone was able to admire their efforts.
At Kāpiti Hub, Heidi had drawn and coloured beautiful sea creatures, Keanu had created a spectacular “under the boat” ocean scene and others online showed off incredible, vivid drawings.
We can’t wait to see more from these talented people on the walls at the IHC Art Awards.
In the meantime, if you or someone you know loves drawing, join Draw with Lindsey, Thursday mornings from 11am on IHC Media.
